Best walking trails in the Grampians

The Grampians offer nature lovers bountiful options for walking tracks and scenic views.

Grampians National Park

Just a short three-hour drive from Melbourne is the Grampians National Park, famed for spectacular lookout points, wildlife encounters and some of the best walking trails in Victoria. Whether you are an expert hiker or a novice ambler, the Grampians offer a range of walking trails for all abilities. Exploring this picturesque region on foot is the best way to enjoy this fantastic natural setting close to Melbourne.

MacKenzie Falls

Length: 2 kms
Difficulty: easy / moderate
Definitely a highlight of any trip to the Grampians is admiring the cascading water crashing over the MacKenzie Falls. There are two options here; the MacKenzie Falls lookout is an easier walk for stunning views above the falls and surrounding regions, while the walk to the base of the falls includes more than 200 steep rocky steps. The falls are the biggest in Victoria and flow year-round, but swimming in the pool below is not permitted.

Balconies and Reed Lookouts

Length: 2 kms
Difficulty: easy
The easy walking trail to stunning views at two lookout points makes this walk one of the most popular in the Grampians. Suitable for walkers of all abilities, the path begins at the Reed Lookout carpark and leads you through beautiful stringybark forest to spectacular views of the Victoria Valley at the Balconies Lookout.

The Pinnacle

Length: 4.2 kms
Difficulty: moderate
If you are feeling ambitious, you can start this hike at Halls Gap (10 kilometres), but the start from Wonderland Carpark is more popular and achievable for most people. The path, steep and challenging at times, will take you through and over awesome rock formations, including the Grand Canyon (the name is exaggerated but walking between the cliffs rising 20 metres either side is impressive). Arriving at the Pinnacle offers breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks and great photo opportunities.

Hollow Mountain

Length: 2.2 kms
Difficulty: moderate
The gravel track from the Hollow Mountain carpark will take you over difficult terrain on a steep and strenuous hike. Once you reach the top, you will be rewarded with impressive views of the Wimmera Plains.

Boroka Lookout

Length: 90 metres
Difficulty: easy
The extraordinary views from the Boroka Lookout are easily accessed from the carpark and are suitable for travellers with reduced mobility. The walk through stringybark forest leads to the platforms for panoramic views of Lake Bellfield and the eastern plains.
