Getting to know the Adelaide Hills

Everyone raves about the fantastic wine region in the Barossa Valley, but what about the nearby Adelaide Hills?

Adelaide Hills

Less than an hours drive from Adelaide sits the Adelaide Hills. Head inland, away from the spectacular Adelaide beaches and become immersed in the rolling hills of this cool climate wine region.

Wine region

Despite being just a stone’s throw from the popular warm climate vineyards in the Barossa Valley, the Adelaide Hills produce some of Australia’s best cool-climate wines.

With over 60 wineries in the region, there is a cellar door at just about every corner. Head in and meet the makers of the delicious tipples. Wander to The Lane and sit down for a taste of their single-vineyard wines. Enjoy a wine flight and experience the best they have on offer, or sit yourself down for the afternoon with a long lunch and perfect pairings.

Or head out for dinner with a view at KI by Geoff Hard. Geoff is a member of one of Australia’s most famous wine families, so you know his work is going to be impeccable. KI has been recognised as one of Australia’s best cellar doors. Enjoy a meal with spectacular lake and vineyard views for an unforgettable evening.

If you’re more of a gin drinker than a wine connoisseur, the Adelaide Hills have you covered too! Take a visit to Ambleside Distillers, wander through their botanical garden before sitting down for a tasting at their bar. Enjoy their blends with a cheese platter or try your hand a gin blending in a masterclass.

No matter what your preferred drink is, the Adelaide Hills has you covered. Whatever you do, remember to stock up before you head home!

Go exploring

Scattered through the hills are a collection of delightful inlets and towns. Pop into the delightful hamlet, Stirling. This leafy village has tree-lined streets filled with amazing eateries and boutique shopping experiences. Stop for the most delicious brunch at Patch Kitchen and Garden or satisfy your sweet tooth at the award-winning Red Cacao. If you’re here on a weekend why not try to visit the Stirling Market. More than 80 stalls show up each month to display their wares. Pick up some local baked goods or homewares, plenty of creatives show too displaying everything from art to clothing and jewellery. Markets are a great way to meet the community and help the local economy too!

Hahndorf is another lovely town found in the Adelaide Hills. The town is famous as Australia’s oldest surviving German settlement. Head here for a taste of Bavaria in Adelaide! Enjoy delicious German meals with some small-town hospitality. This town has an interesting history that you can learn about in the local museum. It is also home to the famous Beerenberg Family Farm! Visit during the summer and pick your own strawberries before sitting down for some tea and scones topped with their homemade jams.

The Adelaide Hills are a fantastic day trip less than an hour from the Adelaide city. Be sure to add a visit to your itinerary next time you’re in South Australia!
